United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was shot and killed Wednesday morning outside of the Hilton Midtown Hotel, where the UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor day was scheduled to take place.
Thompson, 50, was a longtime executive at UnitedHealth Group, joining the company in 2004. He climbed the corporate ladder during his time there, ultimately being named CEO of the nation’s largest insurer in April 2021.
The company canceled the investor day following the shooting and later released a statement addressing the situation.
“We are deeply saddened and shocked at the passing of our dear friend and colleague Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him. We are working closely with the New York Police Department and ask for your patience and understanding during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”
An NYPD spokesperson confirmed to CNBC that a 50-year-old man was shot in Midtown Manhattan, transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. The police did not confirm the identity of the victim at the time.
Per reporting from the New York Post, Thompson was shot in the chest by an unknown, masked assailant who fled on a bike and remains at large, as of mid-Wednesday morning.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing but the publication added that there is suspicion that the shooting was a “possible targeted attack” as the shooter was allegedly waiting for him, according to reports from the Post and New York Times.
Hours later, the NYPD said Thompson was killed in a premeditated, targeted attack and that a manhunt was underway to find the suspect.
This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
