Therapy has never been more in than it is now.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health awareness has reached new heights across the country and people are far more open about their behavioral health struggles on platforms such as TikTok.

Yet is it possible to have too much mental health awareness? Can a person experience burnout from therapy? According to TikTok, it is possible.

In one video, therapist influencer Paulina — who goes by @paulina.the.therapist on the platform — explains the phenomenon.

Therapy is often defined by analyzing thoughts and behaviors, engaging in introspection and picking apart patterns – but sometimes this can become mentally exhausting.

“I have introspection burnout, and I think it’s really important to talk about,” she explains in the video. “I’m tired of this awareness. I’m tired of introspection. I’m tired of doing the inner work. I would really like to lay down in some grass somewhere.”

“I’m tired of looking for the causes of my behaviors,” she continues. “I want to give myself the freedom of not vibing with someone without having to meticulously pick apart who they remind me of in my early life and what they bring up in me.”

The video resonated with her audience, with many commenters noting they were experiencing the same thing.

“Yes! I literally said this exact thing to my therapist yesterday,” one commenter wrote. “I think therapy gives me more anxiety because I’m always thinking about it.”

“Dude introspection burnout is literally the word I’ve been searching for to describe how I’m feeling,” another commenter wrote.

“Yes! I always remind myself that I am not a ‘project,’” another one added. “I don’t always need to be working on myself.”

      Is ‘introspection burnout’ real?

Mental health influencers as well as patients on TikTok have pointed out that feeling emotionally drained after therapy sessions can be normal — and sometimes even beneficial in the long run.

Sometimes, they refer to it as a “therapy hangover.”

“Have you ever left your therapy session feeling emotionally drained, tired, exhausted, to the point where you have no energy to do anything else after that therapy session?” one mental health influencer, Katrina, says in a video. “Or maybe you felt worse after that therapy session… then you might be experiencing a therapy hangover.”

Other influencers, who are therapists themselves, point out that even they experience therapy hangovers after sessions.

“I had my own therapy session yesterday, and I’m nursing my [therapy] hangover today big time,” one woman says. “But you’re not alone. This is not uncommon. When you’re in therapy doing the work of identifying, verbalizing and learning how to sit with uncomfortable emotions, it can feel uncomfortable.”

Therapists sometimes tell their clients that they might feel emotionally drained or raw for 24 to 48 hours after a session, and urge them to engage in “guilt-free” self-care to help manage it.

However, what happens when therapy starts to feel counterproductive and leads to long-term burnout?

This might be a real phenomenon too — and it’s slightly different than therapy hangovers, according to Stacy Thiry, a mental health clinician at therapy platform Grow Therapy.

“Introspection burnout is the feeling of being mentally and emotionally drained from overthinking or constantly analyzing yourself,” she said. “It’s when self-reflection, which is supposed to help you grow, starts feeling overwhelming and counterproductive. It’s a real experience for many people who get caught in the cycle of trying too hard to figure themselves out.”

She explained that some symptoms of “introspection burnout” include feeling mentally tired all the time, being self-critical and experiencing difficulties in making decisions due to over-analyzing every option.

      Handling ‘introspection burnout’

Thiry noted that sometimes, getting out of your head is the best way to manage feelings of introspection burnout.

Taking part in a physical activity — like yoga, walking or dancing — can help a person reconnect with their body and reduce mental fatigue.

She also recommends turning your focus to external things, like helping other people with tasks that help reaffirm your value to others.

Finally, practicing mindfulness — or connecting with the present rather than thoughts about the past or future — is a reliable way to help ease introspection burnout.

“By practicing these strategies, you can restore balance, reduce mental fatigue, and approach introspection as a tool for growth rather than a source of stress,” she said.

Other therapists and mental health influencers on TikTok provide their own ways of coping with mental and emotional exhaustion during or after therapy. Sometimes, @therapybygabby notes, it’s as simple as taking a day of rest and extra sleep.
