BetterHelp debuted its multiyear partnership with three WNBA teams to spark conversation about mental health, especially in female athletes.

The primary goal of the campaign is to align BetterHelp with the three teams on mental health initiatives, and promote conversations around the importance of mental wellness, especially among athletes, said Sara Brooks, chief growth officer at BetterHelp.

The New York Liberty, Las Vegas Aces, and Dallas Wings will work with BetterHelp to host community events and in-arena experiences along with educational and digital content.

“As the visibility of women’s sports, especially the WNBA, continues to grow, so does the pressure these athletes face,” Brooks said.

Brooks explained that female athletes are especially prone to online judgement. They struggle with both intrinsic pressure and extrinsic judgement that is amplified by social media followers and comments. To help combat this, athletes on each partnering team will receive free therapy from BetterHelp for mental health support on and off of the court.

“One of the most prominent struggles is the pressure for peak performance while becoming a public persona,” Brooks explained.

Younger generations are also being exposed to the effects of social media and online judgement at earlier and earlier ages.

The partnership tipped off with an event with the New York Liberty team hosting a Brooklyn basketball clinic for roughly 75 middle school girls. A local BetterHelp therapist spoke with the girls about the importance of physical and mental health. The therapist also shared helpful tools the girls could use in their everyday lives to support their mental wellness.

The partnership is part of BetterHelp’s broader effort to promote the importance of mental wellness globally. Along with the partnership, they released a State of Stigma survey across 23 countries to understand fears, beliefs, and stigma that prevent people from seeking therapy.

BetterHelp also partnered with nonprofits to provide free therapy to underserved communities, frontline mental health workers, and Gen Z students and partnered with media outlets to normalise therapy. In May, the brand donated over 2,700 months of free therapy.

Finally, BetterHelp worked with Peacock on their “People Like Me” series and launched its own podcast to create multimedia channels that continue to break down stigma and provide mental health insights.
