Be Moved by TD Handwriting Simulator

Up to 800,000 mental-health patients suffer from tardive dyskinesia, or TD, a life-altering movement disorder caused by taking antipsychotic drugs. Worse, 85% of them are undiagnosed.

And while doctors “know” about TD, many dismiss it as “just a side effect,” unaware of the ways patients struggle trying to control their body’s movements. Even simply writing their name can be challenging, as the movements can be unpredictable in frequency and intensity.

To make a significant impact with a small budget of $125,000, this approach focused on something that would break through to doctors quickly as a convention experience — as quickly as signing their name.

Collaborating with movement disorder specialists, it analyzed insights around patients’ handwriting patterns, collecting information on the frequency and degree of TD movements. The result was an ergonomically designed stylus that provides haptic feedback, paired with a specially designed writing tablet with software that further alters the appearance of users’ signatures based on real patient writing patterns.

To create a bigger buzz around the experience, it used a large display screen in the convention booth, where doctors could post their signatures after trying the simulator. Attendees could watch as the altered signatures of their colleagues animated on screen, motivating them to try the experience for themselves. By the end of each convention, the display became a moving mural of the impact of TD not just on fine motor skills but also on the identities of those affected.

So far, more than 400 healthcare providers have tried the simulator, shifting doctors’ mindsets and building empathy. “My patients sign their names every time they check in for an appointment,” said one. “I can’t believe they’ve been struggling so much right here in my office.”
