High FeNO is a test that can identify airway inflammation linked to a three times greater risk of asthma attacks. In a world where asthma kills someone every 10 minutes, this simple and non-invasive test can save lives. Yet, the test is underused and poorly understood by  healthcare providers and patients.

Sanofi started to pilot FeNO in Spain. The FeNomenal experience allows patients to breathe into the device and then see and hear their own risk in a way that inspires them to act. Rather than use test results to frighten patients, it uses custom data visualization and audio design to pull people into the experience in a comforting, calming way. It correlates individual raw scores to an algorithm of shapes, colors and sounds that turn the lung’s distress into a surround sound sensory experience.

This mesmerizing data display isn’t just beautiful. These asthma melodies are helpful, giving patients insight into their score. The more inflamed the color, the more constricted the shape, the more intense the noise, the greater the inflammation. That means they are more at risk for an asthma attack. A score higher than 50 means they must act to protect themselves.

They can also see how their scores map against others in their region — it shows them, in a meaningful way, what their scores mean. This test and the visual experience empowers them to bring that data to their provider, make a plan and get their asthma in better control, with 17% of patients learning they were at risk for an asthma attack. As a result, FeNomenal was implemented in four hospitals and nearly a dozen clinical settings across three continents and offered in four languages.

      Illustrate Change

This ambitious effort is rapidly diversifying medical illustration and raising awareness about the lack of representation: Only 5% of medical illustrations include dark skin, and only 8% of medical illustrators are people of color. It has increased representative drawings by 67% and started a global fellowship for illustrators, with 11 contributing artists from eight countries. Featured by the United Nations Development Program, the campaign has been adopted by top medical school curriculums and embraced as an essential tool by doctors.
