September is right around the corner and that means it’s time for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to come to the forefront.

As part of National Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month, MDA is launching its 30 Days of Strength campaign to raise awareness about muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular diseases.

The organization is hosting hundreds of events across the country next month to support the mission of supporting patients living with neuromuscular diseases while also raising funds for clinical research at more than 150 MDA Care Centers.

MDA stated in a press release Monday morning that its board of directors approved $8.4 million in research grants, which will be distributed next month.

The organization will be accepting donations for the 30 Days of Strength campaign on its website.

“This year under the umbrella of our MDA Care Center Network, we expanded our MDA Resource Center to guide and support families considering novel treatments in gene therapy. The new MDA Gene Therapy Support Network is here to help connect with families one-on-one to navigate these new treatments,” MDA CEO Donald Wood, PhD said in a statement. “Steadily and successfully, MDA has delivered increasingly on the hopes and dreams of the people we serve. One thing has never changed – and never will – is our commitment to the promise of research and emerging therapies to treat – and one day, cure – neuromuscular disorders that are genetic in nature. Our leadership in genetic medicine and neuromuscular disease research is bringing new hope and possibilities to everyone living with these diseases, and empowering people to live longer, more independent lives. For more than 70 years, MDA’s mission to empower the people we serve to live longer, more independent lives remains a constant source of hope.”

The launch of 30 Days of Strength points to an evolution in terms of MDA’s fundraising capabilities and front-facing strategy.

For nearly 50 years, the organization hosted the MDA Labor Day Telethon, with comedian Jerry Lewis serving as master of ceremonies from 1966 to 2010.

MDA kicked off the 30 Days of Strength less than two weeks after promoting Morgan Roth to chief marketing officer, a newly created position. Roth, who previously served as VP of marketing and communication for the organization, reports to Wood in the role.
