Walt Geer was initially hired by VML to focus on experience design and, during the first four years of his tenure, has fueled the agency’s work in that realm on behalf of everyone from Pfizer to AstraZeneca to Walgreens Boots Alliance. But his influence and the breadth of his talent transcend his day gig. On the eve of the pandemic, Geer teamed with his TBWA\WorldHealth colleague Wallye Holloway — with whom he has since united at VML — to launch #BlackHealthNow, which shone a light on the disparities in health outcomes between Black and white Americans. Indeed, on issues around race and equity, Geer continues to speak up when many others are silent: In 2021, he called out LinkedIn for removing posts about diversity and anti-racism. (LinkedIn attributed the removal to a “technical error.”) There’s a case to be made that he’s the industry’s conscience.
